Mobile or fixed
A mobile pedestal can be moved for cleaning and adapts to each person, which is what you want when desks change hands. A fixed unit anchors to the desk and takes more weight on top, so it works where you need the extra surface.
Measure the clear space, not the desk height
The most common mistake is measuring up to the desktop and later finding the pedestal hits a beam or a leg. What you need is the real clear opening under the top, and the depth too, because a pedestal that sticks out ends up in the way.
If you store hanging folders
A filing drawer is deeper than the ones above it and carries the rails for hanging folders. If the desk handles documents, decide this before manufacturing: adding it later means replacing the whole unit.
With a lock, if the desk is shared
On desks shared across shifts or in open offices, the lock stops being a detail. When nobody has a fixed desk, a locker per person usually beats a pedestal per desk.
