What makes a chair truly ergonomic?

That it adjusts to the body of the user, and not the other way around. This requires at least three things: adjustable seat height, so that the feet rest completely on the floor; lumbar support, so that the lower curve of the back has somewhere to rest; and a reclining mechanism with adjustable resistance, which accompanies the movement instead of blocking it.

Everything that cannot be regulated ends up defining the person's posture. That is why the word ergonomic, alone, does not guarantee anything: you have to look at the list of regulations, not the label.

Which regulations are essential and which are optional?

Essentials: seat height, lumbar support and recline with adjustable tension. Highly recommended for full days: adjustable armrests, which relieve the shoulders when writing, and seat depth, which is key when people of different heights use the same position.

Optional depending on use: the headrest is useful in jobs with many video calls or reading breaks, and is dispensable in high rotation positions. The rule of thumb: the more hours at a time and the more different people use the chair, the more adjustments it needs.

What changes when you buy 20 instead of one?

Three things that do not appear in the individual purchase. First, repeatability: the team will grow, and being able to buy the same chair in 18 months is worth more than a discount today. A model that comes out of a catalog leaves the office uneven forever.

Second, the spare parts: in twenty chairs used daily, at some point a piston, a wheel or a cover will fail. If there are no spare parts, every failure is a new chair. How do you test a chair before deciding?

Sitting down, not looking at the card. A simple protocol that we recommend: test each model for at least ten minutes, adjust all the regulations without reading the manual (if they are not understood by themselves, no one will use them), and repeat the test with the tallest and shortest person on the team, because a chair that fits well on average can fit poorly on extremes.
