The best ergonomic chairs in the world are from Herman Miller, Steelcase, Haworth, Humanscale, Knoll, Vitra, Okamura and Ergohuman, and most cost between $1,000 and $2,400 before tax. This comparison scores them in ergonomics, price and availability in Chile, where the Dunati Axis and the Amara top the ranking, and explains what makes each one different.

These are the best ergonomic chairs of 2026: the world references that are most repeated by independent reviews and the two that top our ranking to buy in Chile, where we rate ergonomics, price and availability.

  • Dunati Axis.First in our ranking to buy in Chile (9.8 out of 10). Adjustable seat and lumbar support, 3D armrests and ANSI/BIFMA X5.1 certification. US$186.
  • Dunati Amara.Second (9.0). Mesh seat and backrest, like the Aeron, with adjustable seat and 3D armrests. US$240.
  • Herman Miller Aeron. The reference since 1994. Mesh, three sizes and 12 years warranty. From US$2,045.
  • Herman Miller Embody.Designed for long days in front of the computer, with a backrest that follows the spine. From US$2,395.
  • Steelcase Leap. The most adjustable from Steelcase, with lumbar support adjustable in height and firmness. About US$2,167.
  • Steelcase Gesture.Armrests that rotate 360 degrees for those who alternate keyboard, phone and tablet. About US$2,213.
  • Haworth Fern and Zody.Backrest without hard edges and 12-year warranty, for almost half the price of an Aeron. From US$1,055.
  • Humanscale Freedom. It reclines on its own according to the weight of the person sitting, without levers. From US$1,494.
  • Knoll Generation and Vitra ID Mesh.North American and European design with flexible backrest. From US$1,670 and US$682.
  • Okamura Contessa and Ergohuman Elite. The Japanese reference and the most accessible premium mesh of the group. About US$1,301 and US$530.

All prices for this article are in dollars and without taxes, so that they can be compared with each other. Those from the United States are published like this; Those that appear in euros, yen or Australian dollars we convert them at the exchange rate of October 2, 2026 and subtract the included tax. Dunati's are the list price without VAT ($217,990 and $280,959 with VAT). They do not include import or shipment to Chile.

The price difference is the key to this ranking: an Aeron costs eleven times what an Axis. Below we explain what is gained and what is not gained by choosing one or the other.

How do we choose these chairs?

We start from what the most read independent reviews repeat. The Steelcase Leap, the Herman Miller Aeron, the Herman Miller Embody and the Haworth Fern appear again and again on TechRadar and Tom's Guide's 2026 lists, and the Steelcase Gesture was for years the chair recommended by Wirecutter of the New York Times, according to Steelcase itself. To these we add the other brands that lead corporate furniture in the world.

We then review each chair with the same criteria:

  • Regulations.Seat height and depth, lumbar support and armrests. Seat depth and adjustable lumbar support make the most difference on a full-time basis.
  • Warranty. How many years and what does it cover?
  • Ability. The maximum weight reported by the manufacturer.
  • Certifications.ANSI/BIFMA X5.1 (resistance and durability), GREENGUARD Gold (emissions) and sustainability certifications such as BIFMA LEVEL or Cradle to Cradle.
  • Official pricein the manufacturer's store, seen on October 4, 2026.

At Dunati we sell office chairs, so we are interested in this comparison. That's why we use official prices and data published by each manufacturer, and we clearly say when one of these brands is better than ours.

If the only thing that matters is ergonomics, without looking at price or availability, the ones with the highest scores are the Steelcase Leap, the Haworth Zody and the Ergohuman Elite, with 10. If you also weigh the price and being able to buy it, test it and repair it in Chile, the Axis and the Amara are on top.

How do we calculate the score?

Each criterion has a fixed rule, so anyone can review the calculation. Ergonomics are worth half the final score because it is what matters most in a chair that is used eight hours a day; the price and availability in Chile are worth a quarter each.

  • Ergonomics.Part in 4 points. Add 2 if the seat is adjustable in depth (or if the chair comes in sizes), 2 if the lumbar support is adjustable and 1 if it is fixed or optional, and between 1 and 2 depending on the armrests: 2 if they adjust in four directions or more, 1.5 if in three and 1 if less.
  • Price.10 points for the cheapest on the list and 0 for the most expensive. In between, the scale is proportional: every time the price doubles, the chair loses the same points.
  • Availability in Chile.10 if it has stock, published price, showroom to test it and spare parts in the country; 7 if it is sold in several Chilean stores with a published price; 6 if you have a distributor or representative who quotes it; 2 if it can only be imported.

We don't include design and materials in the score because they can't be measured with a ruler. In that, Herman Miller and Steelcase continue to be the reference, and we say it on every sheet.

Herman Miller Aeron: why is it still the reference?

The Aeron, designed by Bill Stumpf and Don Chadwick in 1994 and renovated in 2016, changed the idea of what an office chair was. It popularized the high-end mesh chair and is manufactured in three sizes (A, B and C), to adapt to almost any build.

  • Official price:from US$2,045.
  • Warranty:12 years.
  • Ability:from 136 to 181 kg, depending on size.
  • The best:the Pellicle mesh, the three sizes and a BIFMA LEVEL 3 sustainability certification.
  • To consider:the seat is not adjustable in depth; That function is fulfilled by the size. Choosing the correct size is key.
  • Suitable if:The chair is for a person who will spend many years in that position and the budget allows it.

Aeron or Embody: which one is better?

Embody, by Bill Stumpf and Jeff Weber (2008), is designed for those who spend the day in front of the screen. Its backrest is formed by a kind of flexible column that accompanies each movement of the back.

  • Official price:from US$2,395.
  • Warranty:12 years.Ability:136 kg.
  • Key difference:The Embody does regulate the depth of the seat and comes in one size. The Aeron ventilates better because of its mesh; The Embody distributes pressure better on very long days.

Steelcase Leap or Gesture: how are they different?

Steelcase is the other major North American brand in the sector. Its two best-known chairs target different needs.

  • Leap (version 2, 2006).It is Steelcase's most adjustable chair. Its backrest changes shape with the spine, the lumbar support is adjusted in height and firmness, and the armrests move in four directions. About US$2,167. Supports up to 181 kg.
  • Gesture (2013).Designed for the way we work today, alternating between computer, phone and tablet. Its armrests rotate 360 degrees. About US$2,213. Supports up to 181 kg.
  • Guarantee of both:12 years, even in continuous 24-hour use, which makes them widely used in offices that operate in shifts.
  • Suitable if:An alternative to Herman Miller with the same level of guarantee is being sought. The Leap for those who prioritize lumbar support; the Gesture for those who change their posture a lot.

Haworth Fern and Zody: the best price-quality ratio in the premium segment?

Haworth offers the same 12-year warranty as Herman Miller and Steelcase, for significantly less.

  • Fern (2016).Its back is formed by a central stem and flexible leaves, without hard edges that press on the back. Armrests in four directions and adjustable seat depth. From US$1,180, with BIFMA and GREENGUARD Gold certification.
  • Zody (2005).Its lumbar support is adjusted separately on each side of the back, something unusual. From US$1,055, with GREENGUARD Gold and Cradle to Cradle certification.
  • Suitable if:You want a top-of-the-line international chair without reaching US$2,000.

Humanscale Freedom: does a chair work without levers?

Designed by Niels Diffrient in 1999, the Freedom reclines itself depending on the weight of the person sitting, and its armrests are attached to the backrest and move with it. It does not have knobs to adjust the tension.

  • Official price:from US$1,494.Ability:181 kg.
  • Warranty:15 years in structure and mechanism, the longest of this group.
  • Suitable if:Several people will use the chair, as in shared positions, and no one will take the time to adjust it.

Knoll Generation and Vitra ID Mesh: flexible back design

  • Knoll Generation (2009).Backrest and seat without rigid frame, which flex in various directions and allow you to sit sideways or recline without losing support. From US$1,670, with a 12-year warranty.
  • Vitra ID Mesh (2010).Designed by Antonio Citterio, with ANSI/BIFMA X5.1 and GREENGUARD certification. It is the most modular of the group: it is assembled by choosing armrests and mechanism. From about US$682 in its basic version, without armrests.
  • Suitable if:The design of the space is as important as ergonomics.

Okamura Contessa and Ergohuman Elite: Japan and premium mesh

  • Okamura Contessa Seconda.Designed by the Italian studio of Giorgetto Giugiaro, with the controls at the tip of the armrests, within reach. ANSI/BIFMA X5.1 Certification. About US$1,301.
  • Ergohuman Elite.Full mesh, lumbar support with adjustable pressure, headboard and armrests with many positions. It supports 150 kg and has a 5-year warranty. About US$530, a quarter of an Aeron.

What do the best chairs in the world have in common?

Leaving aside branding and design, all eight share five things. This is the list that should be used to evaluate any chair, no matter what the cost:

  1. Depth adjustable seat, or sizes that fulfill that function. Without this, the short person or the tall person always sits poorly.
  2. Adjustable lumbar support, in height at least.
  3. Armrests that adjust in at least three directions.
  4. ANSI/BIFMA X5.1 Certification, the standard that tests the strength and durability of office chairs with drop, back pull, repeated rotation and stability tests.
  5. Long warranty and spare parts available, because a chair for daily use wears out in parts: piston, wheels, armrests and upholstery.

What you pay above that is design, materials, sizes and years of warranty. They are real things, but not always necessary.

Can these chairs be bought in Chile?

Herman Miller, Steelcase, Okamura and Haworth have distributors or representatives in Chile, who quote each model; Their prices are rarely published. For Humanscale and Knoll we did not find a local distributor as of October 4, 2026.

Importing them directly is possible, but shipping, import taxes and VAT must be added to the official price. And there is something more important than the price: the US store's 12-year warranty cannot always be exercised from Chile, and getting a replacement can take weeks. Before importing, it is advisable to confirm who is responsible for the guarantee in the country.

Dunati ergonomic chairs: the certified alternative in Chile

All of these chairs have ANSI/BIFMA They go from highest to lowest price, in dollars without taxes to compare them with the table and, in parentheses, with their list price in pesos with VAT as of October 4, 2026. The file for each product shows the current value.

  • Midas, US$545 ($637,990 with VAT).Management in leather or eco-leather, Red Dot design award and GREENGUARD Gold certification.
  • Eros, US$325 ($380,990 with VAT).German Krall+Roth technical mesh management, class 4 piston, aluminum base and GREENGUARD Gold certification. Supports 120 kg.
  • Amara, US$240 ($280,959 with VAT).Mesh seat and backrest, like the Aeron, with adjustable seat depth, 3D armrests and self-weighting mechanism. Lumbar support is provided by the curve of the backrest. Fresh for long days.
  • Aquila, US$236 ($276,863 with VAT).Adjustable seat depth, adjustable lumbar support, 3D armrest, self-weighting synchronous mechanism and headboard. For those who recline and want to rest their head.
  • Axis, US$186 ($217,990 with VAT).Depth-adjustable seat, height-adjustable lumbar support, armrests that adjust in height, angle and depth, and synchronous mechanism with three locking positions. Supports 120 kg. It is what we recommend for a full day.
  • Grace, US$150 ($175,990 with VAT).Synchronous, with lumbar support and adjustable armrests. For daily work.
  • Cooper, US$130 ($151,990 with VAT).Mesh backrest and synchronous locking mechanism. For administrative positions and large teams.

For quantities, the price is quoted based on volume.

Which chair is best for use?

  • Administrative positions or large teams:a certified synchronous chair, such as the Cooper or Grace. Paying a premium chair per seat is rarely justified at this scale.
  • Full time, eight hours or more:seat depth and adjustable lumbar support, without exception. The Axis or the Aquila; in the premium world, the Leap or the Aeron.
  • Heat or long days sitting:full mesh. The Amara or the Eros; in premium, the Aeron or the Ergohuman.
  • Shared positions:a chair that adjusts itself or with few levers. In premium, the Humanscale Freedom.
  • Management and rooms that receive clients:The appearance is as important as the fit. The Eros or the Midas; in premium, the Okamura Contessa or the Embody.
  • Buildings with LEED or WELL certification:GREENGUARD Gold certification. Eros and Midas have it.

Is it worth paying more for a premium chair?

It depends on how many people and how many years. An Aeron costs US$2,045 before taxes; an Axis, US$186: eleven times less. In exchange, the Aeron offers a 12-year warranty, three sizes, top-notch materials and a design that has become classic.

For a person who will use the same chair for ten years, it may be worth it. To equip twenty or a hundred seats, almost never: the budget difference is enough for desks, meeting rooms and storage. What is not advisable is to buy a chair without the five features on the list, regardless of its price.

What is the best ergonomic chair in the world?

There is not only one. The ones that are most often repeated as the best in independent reviews are the Steelcase Leap, the Steelcase Gesture, the Herman Miller Aeron, the Herman Miller Embody and the Haworth Fern. The best one for each person depends on their build, how many hours they sit and their budget.

How much does a good ergonomic chair cost in Chile?

A corporate chair with ANSI/BIFMA X5.1 certification and key regulations costs between $150,000 and $400,000 with VAT, about $130 to $340 without tax. The premium international brands on this list mostly cost between US$1,000 and US$2,400 before taxes, before import and shipping.

How long does an ergonomic chair last?

With daily use and maintenance, a good chair lasts many years, and the international premium ones offer a 12-year warranty. What defines its useful life is that there are spare parts: the piston, the wheels and the mat are changed, and the structure continues in use.

What certification should an ergonomic chair have?

At least ANSI/BIFMA X5.1, which proves the chair will withstand years of heavy use. If air quality matters, for example in LEED or WELL certified buildings, GREENGUARD Gold is also suitable.
